In almost every city, you can find booklets listing different complexes in the area. While these free circulars are not up to date with who still has apartments for rent and who doesnt, it is a great place to get a list of what complexes are in your new area. You can look at the location and list of amenities before you contact the leasing office for a tour.
Add your own area rugs, even if they apartment is already carpeted. Using area rugs pulls a room together and changes the atmosphere in a room dramatically. There are rugs available for all tastes and at all price points. If your style tends toward traditional, look for oriental style rugs. Those with a modern or contemporary flair can seek out bold geometrics or abstract swirls of color.
Glass: Glass is one thing that is commonly found. While traditionalists may prefer wood coffee tables and other pieces, a modern apartment will have glass pieces. Glass makes the apparent feel clean and bright. The sunlight reflecting off of or shining through the glass of various objects gives the modern apartment an aesthetic appeal. Colored glass can also be used to match certain color schemes throughout the room. The colored glass can be in contrast to the colors or match it and still appear modern and up-to-date.
Choose some art for your walls -- the bigger, the better. Wall art can add some drama to your apartment decorating scheme. If your apartment complex has a rule against nail holes, hang your art with a removable adhesive which is easy to pull off later. That way, you can take it all down when you move without leaving any marks.
